GIORGIO ARMANI

The CELEBRATED Italian designer REDEFINED luxury through

fashion. As his empire evolves into LIFESTYLE, Giorgio Armani tells

PURSUIT how his elegant aesthetic holds LIMITLESS POTENTIAL

here are few names as synonymous with refined elegance and craftsmanship

as that of Giorgio Armani. Since founding his eponymous fashion label in

1975, Mr Armani – as he is always reverently addressed – has created an

empire which now spans haute couture, ready-to-wear, beauty, homeware, interior

design, hotels and restaurants, floristry and even chocolates. There is no lifestyle

element, it seems, which cannot infinitely benefit from the Armani touch.

“It all stems from the drive to create a world which reflects my taste,” says

Armani. “It’s a natural progression, or at least it was for me. First you dress the

body then you dress the space inhabited by the body. Having furnished the space I

also personalise it, exploring all the possibilities of

an Armani label lifestyle.”

This year, the homeware arm of the Armani

empire – Armani/Casa – celebrates its 21st birthday,

but its story really began back in 1982 when Armani

designed a lamp for his company’s Milan offices.

Now known as the ‘Logo Lamp’, it became the

Armani/Casa logo and still forms an integral part of

each collection. “I’m very fond of this piece; with its

pure geometric shape, natural materials and colours,

it symbolically encapsulates all the fundamental

elements of my design philosophy,” he says.

Just as Armani reinvented the way clothes were

made – deconstructing centuries-old methods of

tailoring to create a fluid, modern and rarefied

silhouette – so too has Armani/Casa influenced the

way we live. While the brand’s early designs were

strongly linear, it has evolved into something softer.

“Over the years, however, I’ve discovered a

certain softness, a taste for the artisan nature of

material and, if you like, a toned-down, luxury

frivolity which I now find are the key features of the collection,” says Armani. “Yet

what truly emerges is the taste for the basic line which enhances the material. In this

sense it is identical to my approach to clothes, in which it’s always the material which

speaks, via the pared-down design.”

Armani established the Armani/Casa Interior Design Studio in 2004, realising

his vision for elegant living. Recent projects include the Armani/Casa Moscow

Residences, a complex of 26 luxury properties close to the State Tretyakov Gallery,

and he is also redesigning his historic building on Madison Avenue, New York,

which will house not only the new Giorgio Armani boutique but also Residences by

Armani/Casa.

Armani’s expansion into hospitality with the launches of the Armani Hotels in

Dubai in 2010 and in Milan in 2011 saw his vision distilled into service and setting.

How did he ensure that the Armani aesthetic was imbued in every element? “In the

only way I can – fanatically checking all the smallest details, making sure that

everything, from the furniture to the service, reflects my idea and my vision. I’m

pleased with the result because what the hotels are offering is a luxury yet extremely

discreet service, not at all ostentatious, made to measure for each person.”

Recently,

Armani

has

also

been

designing

interiors for yachts. “Designing yacht interiors

represents the coming together of two great passions

– on the one hand the sea and on the other the home

as a space to be dressed,” says Armani. “A yacht is

none other than a moving home on the water, a fusion

of adventure and freedom. I very much like the

technical limitations of this specific area of design,

they stimulate creativity rather than inhibit it.”

The key to Armani’s staggering success as a

creative polymath is undoubtedly his unique ability

to articulate his very specific style in myriad ways

and to continuously evolve: “The decision not to

evolve is fatal in my opinion,” he says. “I would say

that mine is a deeply humanist vision, and my work

glorifies the person in that everything, from

furniture to clothes, is designed to show them off

and not to disguise them.”

The word ‘luxury’ is an easy word to attribute

to Armani – both the brand and the man – and yet

it is a term in danger of losing its potency, he says.

“There is much talk about luxury, possibly too much, at times even losing sight of

its true meaning.

“For me, luxury is a personal concept and difficult to generalise; whatever makes

you feel good is a luxury to me and is not necessarily something expensive. It can be

a piece of furniture with maximum careful crafting and, likewise, having time

available to spend with the ones you love. As a man, and businessperson, I think

that the utmost in luxury is represented by freedom and independence. We’re

realising this now more than ever.”

AS A MAN, AND

BUSINESSPERSON, I THINK

THAT THE UTMOST IN LUXURY

IS REPRESENTED BY FREEDOM

AND INDEPENDENCE

The iconic design that started the Armani/Casa

WINE OF THE TSARS

s is usually the case with the very rarest and finest creations,

Cristal came into being as the result of the combined ambition

of a commissioning patron and the tenacity of a maker. In

1876, Tsar Alexander II approached his favourite champagne house,

Champagne Louis Roederer, to create a new and exceptional cuvée.

A longstanding lover of fine champagne, Tsar Alexander II wanted a

wine for his personal consumption which would represent the absolute

zenith of quality.

Unlike other champagne houses who bought the majority of

their grapes from a multitude of small growers, Louis Roederer had

purchased their own vineyards in the 1830s, giving them complete

control over every element of the process. The Maison knew exactly

which plots consistently provided the best quality grapes, and could

isolate these parcels to make what was to become the original prestige

cuvée exclusively for the Tsar and his court.

The result was a stunningly pure, concentrated and elegant

champagne, named ‘Cristal’ as the Tsar requested they be bottled

in crystal decanters. It remained the exclusive champagne of the

Tsars until the Romanov dynasty met its end in 1918 and was not

commercialised by the Roederer family until 1945. To this day,

Cristal is made entirely from estate grown fruit and remains a

champagne of very small production. Each of the 45 plots of the

Cristal Estate are on highly chalky soils located in seven grand

cru villages, and over the past two decades the Maison has been

converting their estate to organic and biodynamic viticulture. A

noticeable outcome of this far more sustainable form of farming is

that the natural freshness of the wines is enhanced.

The 2012 release was the first year that Cristal was made from

100% biodynamically farmed grapes, and it was met with great critical

acclaim - as was the subsequent 2013 vintage. Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon,

Cellar Master at Champagne Louis Roederer, believes the best time to

drink Cristal is at 20 years old. This inspired the Vinothèque project,

allowing Cristal to be bought and drunk, rather than bought and aged.

A tiny production of the Vinothèque 2000, the fourth iteration of the

Vinothèque project, has just been released. Lécaillon advises: “Let the

wine breathe, that is the key for Cristal, let the wine open in the glass.”

The eagerly anticipated release of the 2014 vintage in early 2022 will

tell the next chapter in the Cristal story.

A truly legendary champagne, CRISTAL is the House of

Louis Roederer’s most famous wine and with good reason.

CHRONOMÈTRE À RÉSONANCE

F.P. JOURNE

François-Paul Journe is one of the most acclaimed players in the field of haute

horology. A graduate of the Paris watchmaking school, Journe restored clocks and

pocket watches by Breguet and completed commissions from Asprey and Cartier as a

talented young watchmaker. In 1999, he presented his own collection of wristwatches

signed ‘F.P. Journe Invenit et Fecit’ – a Latin phrase meaning ‘invented and made’. His

designs have strong design DNA, none more so than the Chronomètre à Résonance. It

is the only wristwatch in the world to utilise the natural phenomenon of resonance,

where one movement helps regulate the other.

TYPE 5 DIVE WATCH

RESSENCE

Founded by the Belgian industrial designer Benoît Mintiens in 2010, Ressence’s

motto is “built on the expertise of yesterday, crafted with today’s technology”, and

their watches are truly designed for tomorrow. Each model features an instantly

recognisable clear and revolutionary design in which the watch’s sub-dials continually

orbit one another. Regarded as the most legible dive watch ever, the Ressence TYPE

5 is the world’s first watch which can be viewed at any angle under water, thanks to

its edge-to-edge display and 142 components immersed in 37.5 ml of oil within its

domed dial. The choice of the true connoisseur.

LEGACY MACHINE

MB&F

After decades conforming to the rules of corporate watchmaking, Swiss businessman Maximilian Büsser founded what he describes as “a rebellion called MB&F” – Maximilian

Büsser & Friends - in 2005. MB&F assembles collectives of independent watchmakers to develop radical watches – Horological or Legacy Machines. MB&F’s design philosophy

reinterprets traditional, high-quality craftsmanship as three-dimensional kinetic sculptures. Central to the brand’s creative process is a belief that “a creative adult is a child who

survived”. First launched in 2014, the Legacy Machine 101 series embodies and accentuates the essentials of the wristwatch. Its pioneering three dimensional ‘flying’ balance

wheel has become the design signature of the Legacy Machine collection.

When it comes to achieving the BEST LIFESTYLE on board, why

compromise? NICHOLAS DEAN, Managing Partner at Ocean Independence,

explains how commissioning a SUPPORT VESSEL can seamlessly

ENHANCE your yachting experience

hen a superyacht is the ultimate realisation of ambition, the only

limitation should be one’s imagination. But with the advent of bigger and

better tenders and toys, even the largest superyachts are constrained by

what they can carry without compromising on lifestyle. The solution? The specially

commissioned support yacht.

“The support vessel solves a huge number of problems, no matter the size of your

yacht,” says Nicholas Dean, Managing Partner

at Ocean Independence. “You could have a

100-metre yacht and still find that you don’t

have the room on board to accommodate the

tender you want. If you have a support vessel,

that problem is instantly solved.”

Typically 50 – 70 metres and with 15 – 18

knots capability, support vessels can fulfil

any function a client wants for their lifestyle.

“It’s all about customising your lifestyle with

your yachting,” says Dean. “We can enhance

your experience ten-fold as there is so much

available.” From adding more tenders and

toys or facilities such as gyms, saunas and

medical centres, to additional crew and staff

accommodation, the support vessel is designed to offer the best possible lifestyle

solutions with no requirement for compromise on the mothership.

There are other benefits where a support vessel adds to the ease and enjoyment of

your cruise. Hosting a beach party? The support vessel can travel ahead to set it up

before your arrival and stay after your departure to clear up, saving you time. Looking

to invite more than the standard number of 12 guests? Extra accommodation can be

included in the design to ensure you can host more guests with ease.

While support vessels have been in use for a number of years, the trend has picked

up pace recently. “In the late 2000s there were one or two pioneers who decided

they wanted a bigger selection of toys and lifestyle accessories,” says Dean. “Every

activity generates a huge amount of kit on the

yacht. This is the number one advantage that

comes with having a support vessel, and is a big

driver for clients choosing to commission one.”

Complex inflatable water parks can be

kept on board a support yacht, ensuring easy

access without the need for customs clearance.

A flotilla of jet skis, submersibles, wakeboards,

eFoils, seabobs, trimarans, water bikes and

windsurfs, as well as land toys including High

Lifters, eBikes, mountain bikes and off-road

electric skateboards no longer need to take up

valuable space on the yacht.

A support vessel also allows for far larger

tenders. The rising popularity of watersports

such as wakeboarding and foiling calls for a specialist ski boat with a height that

precludes it from fitting in a tender garage. Store it on the deck of the support vessel

and there is no need to compromise.

For sailing yachts, a support vessel provides comfortable accommodation during

large regattas and can carry all the toys which the yacht cannot. Sailing yacht owners

can race their sailing yacht during the day and stay on their larger and better equipped

support yacht at night. It’s all about finding the best solution for their lifestyle.

With typical ranges from 5,000 to 8,000 miles, a support vessel also increases

your ability to access the globe. Purpose-built medical centres mean that even

in the most remote environments you can receive expert medical care. Specialist

doctors can be flown out to accompany owners for the duration of their excursion

for added peace of mind.

Owners and their families and friends often like to challenge themselves while

cruising. “For extreme divers, we can install a dedicated decompression chamber

on board the support vessel,” says Dean. “For clients wishing to explore Canada's

wildest heli skiing, we can include the design of a bespoke helicopter hangar inside the

support vessel to protect the helicopter from the elements.”

According to Dean, the ideal scenario is when the mothership and the support

vessel are commissioned and designed as a single concept. “You want them to be

absolutely complementary in terms of their design; you don’t want to just double up,”

he says. “Excellent quality onshore management and support services will ensure the

two yachts work seamlessly together.”

Another benefit provided by Ocean Independence is the opportunity to charter

a support yacht to other large vessels when it is not in use. This commercial aspect

could be a real advantage to the Owner and cover a percentage of the running costs.

“The question isn’t what can a support vessel do, it’s what do you want it to do?”

says Dean. “What do you want to achieve, where do you want to go and what lifestyle

For the discerning car collector, there are truly LEGENDARY MARQUES to acquire.

PETER BURTON of exclusive automotive member’s club LEDMORE & CO shares three

of the greatest – and MOST DESIRABLE – collector’s cars of the past hundred years

ver a century of coachbuilt car making has created some

extraordinary

artistic

endeavours

which

challenge

the

limitations of both technology and innovation. The romance

and potency of these cars not only realises the dreams of the original

commissioning patron, but generations of future collectors.

The legendary American motor racing enthusiast Willie K

Vanderbilt threw down the gauntlet for pioneering car design in

1907. He commissioned 11 examples of perhaps the world's first ever

supercar from Renault Frères for himself and ten friends. Despite

still having spoked wooden wheels, the Renault 35/45 Vanderbilt

Racer was capable of 70mph+, unheard of in 1907. Their design was

based upon Renault's all-conquering Grand Prix car, albeit scaled

down to make them far more refined and approachable for the

private individual – a racing car that a gentleman could crank.

For a veteran pre-World War I car, its design is breathtakingly

elegant. Enormously expensive, the 11 cars cost USD 150,000 in

1907, which equates to c. USD 1m per car today. Five of the original

11 examples survive today in museums and under private ownership,

with the most recent sale being by Bonhams in 2020 where chassis

number 8938 fetched USD 3.3m.

When Enzo Ferrari decided in 1953 to allow just five examples of

the 375 MM to be built and sold only to patrons of his choosing, he

created an automotive legend. The five cars were to become the

'Speciales', perhaps the most famous of which was chassis 0456AM,

commissioned by film director Roberto Rossellini as a wedding

present for his wife, Swedish actress Ingrid Bergman. It featured

the phenomenal 4.5 litre 330bhp Colombo V12 engine, a one-off

custom

body

by

Pininfarina

featuring

avant-garde

pop-up

headlamps and large cut outs behind the front wings, inspired by the

legendary Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa. The gold paint too was a unique

colour, aptly named ‘Grigio Ingrid.’ Earning itself the moniker

‘Dono d'amore’ – Gift of Love – today its whereabouts remain

unknown, but it is believed to still be owned by former Microsoft

President Jon Shirley, who last exhibited the car at the 2014 Pebble

Beach Concours d'Elegance.

Described by the broadcaster and author James May as "a love

letter to the 911", the Porsche 911 reimagined by Singer combines

the classic aesthetic of the 964 generation of 911 with performance

to match even the most powerful contemporary model. First

commissioned in 2010, the Singer 911 is the antithesis of a production

line vehicle; these are pieces of Porsche-flavoured automotive art.

Each example is entirely unique, commissioned in line with their

Owner’s wishes and costs anywhere between USD 475,000 and USD 2m.

Succeeding in remaining true to the air-cooled powertrain

architecture which is so important to many Porsche collectors, the

Singer 911 is the ultimate collector’s 911.

ASOLARE

FOR CHARTER

Designed by the world renowned Bruce King Yacht Design and

built in 2003 by America’s oldest boatbuilder Hodgdon Yachts,

47m Asolare (ex Scheherazade) is a true masterpiece. She was,

at the time of her launch, the largest cold-molded sailing yacht

ever built, and no detail was overlooked in her creation. As well

as deploying cutting edge technology, Hodgdon's skilled

carvers painstakingly produced unique sculptures as well as

hundreds of individually hand-carved sea motif decorations for

Asolare’s elegant interior, designed by the revered Winch

Design. Her hull and frames were crafted from a 600-year-old

Douglas Fir and a 300-year-old Western Red Cedar tree, while

her functions are fully up to date, controlled using touch screens

and joy sticks. With accommodation for up to six guests in a

master suite and two twin staterooms, and an incredible array of

water toys and accessories, Asolare would make for an

exceptional family charter in the Mediterranean.

Eight guests can be accommodated in four staterooms including a full-beam Owner’s suite, and

the layout can still be adapted for specific requirements. Extensive glazing provides panoramic sea

views from the open-plan salon and dining area, and the Owner could choose to include a gym, spa

Few yachts live up to their name quite like Phoenix will.

Originally built in 1968 by Dutch shipyard E.J. Smit & Zoon as a

commercial vessel, Phoenix will, like her namesake, rise from

the ashes as a bespoke explorer superyacht. Having spent the

first 30 years of her life laying cables in the North Sea, Phoenix’s

second coming reimagined her as the dated yacht Sir Arthur J.

She has now been stripped back to her bare hull at the ICT

shipyard in Turkey, ready for her next Owner to realise her

potential. The newly-rendered exterior and interior by

renowned Omega Architects sees Phoenix become a 58m

explorer with an 11,000-nautical mile range and the option to

fully customise the entire yacht design.

The new renderings propose that the Owner’s stateroom

gains a 2500sqm main deck, private terrace and a luxurious en

suite. Five further staterooms on the lower deck, designed with

contrasting elements of soft leather, brass, marble and European

oak, offer accommodation for 10 further guests. A cinema,

beach club, pool, space for three tenders and the option to add

a helipad will make Phoenix the perfect yacht for the adventurous

Owner. As a proven vessel, Phoenix is the perfect solution for

the time-challenged Owner seeking a customisable yacht.
